Course Content

  • Introduction to laboratory animal science
  • Alternative and complementary methods
  • Biology of relevant laboratory animal species (mouse, rat and rabbit) anatomy, physiology, behaviour / handling / recognition of pain and distress / nutrient requirements and feeding practices / breeding and genetics
  • Care and husbandry of relevant laboratory animal species standard animal room, barriers, isolator / housing and caging systems and space requirements / feeding regimes
  • Hygienic requirements in animal facilities cleaning, disinfection / microbiological standardization / health status and monitoring / risk prevention / relevant pathogens (recognition, medication, precautions /influence on experiments)
  • Ethical aspects of animal experimentation
  • Legal aspects for animal experimentation
  • Conducting animal experiments
    experimental design and data collection /anesthesia, analgesia and human endpoints / administration routes and/or sample collection / basic principles of surgery, relevant surgical techniques / pre- and post-operative care / euthanasia and carcass disposal
  • Application and blood removal in mouse, rat and rabbit / Training on surgical instruments, suture training, wound closure on pig model

The course contents are in accordance with the recommendations of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations on the education and training of persons carrying out animal experiments (FELASA, category B). The course was organized and performed by scientific staff of the division for biomedical research at the Medical University Graz, Austria, and the person responsible for compliance with the law (§ 16 Abs. 2 Z 1 TVG 2012).
