Core Facility Ultrastructure Analysis provides services in ultrastructure research / electron microscopy. The established core technologies include transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A particular competence of the facility lies in the area of ultrastructural analysis of cryopreserved or fixed tissues or cells by means of a combination of serial section technology, electron tomography and 3D reconstruction.

Service

  • Classical transmission / scanning electron microscopic methods such as immunogold localization
  • 3D reconstruction of (sub-) cellular structures such as neurons and synapses (in close cooperation with the research unit electron microscopic techniques at the Department of Cell Biology, Histology and Embryology)
  • Detection of chemical elements in subcellular compartments
  • Correlative light and electron microscopy

Infrastructure

  • High pressure freezing technology
  • Automated serial production (ATUMTome / Zeiss)
  • Transmission electron microscopes (e.g. FEI TECNAI)
  • Scanning electron microscopes (e.g. Sigma500 / Zeiss)
